10 Reasons Why This Year's Oscars Ruled!
Most years I’ve found the Academy Awards Show largely lacking. There’s usually a parade of bad dresses followed by an interminably long show with a sprinkling of weird performances that culminate in awards bestowed on underwhelming winners. But not this year! Au contraire Mon Frere! This year I found lots to enjoy.
1. I think Reese Witherspoon was just terrific in last year’s Walk the Line, but her gowns always looked a little dated and matronly to me. Not so this year. Here eggplant hued Nina Ricci by Olivier Theyskens was modern, yet thoroughly feminine and just gorgeous.
2. Penelope Cruz was stunning in a pale pink Versace masterpiece. She looked elegant and lively all at the same time. She really wore it well.
3. No one does the red carpet thing quite like Cate Blanchett. She is always full of good surprises on screen and off. She’s able to pull off really daring dresses with incredible panache, never looking uncomfortable or out of place. She’s got great style and this year she looked sleek and elegant in Armani Prive.
4. Kate Winslet’s been on a roll lately, looking beautiful at every event. She really has a knack for choosing beautifully vibrant colors that don’t overwhelm her fair complexion. The pale sea foam green Valentino gown made her look like a goddess. Her gold earrings were a lovely complement too.
5. Another standout was Rachel Weisz. She was positively regal in a Vera Wang gown and a vintage Cartier necklace. Some people I talked to thought the look was a little over-the-top, but I just loved it. She has a gorgeous face and a beautiful figure so she can really carry off such a glamorous ensemble. I loved the deep red lipstick.
6. Checking out the dresses is great pre-show fodder, but what about the actual show? When Will Ferrell started singing a song I was ready to get bored (he’s a little over-exposed right now). And when Jack Black came on stage I chuckled but I was still preparing for something lame. THEN John C. Reilly leapt out of the audience and I was hooked. The three sang a hilarious song about the trials of being an Oscar-ignored, big money-making comedic actor. They sounded great.
7. Another surprisingly cool performance came from “The Sound-Effects Choir”. A huge chorus of sound-effects artists performed live effects in front of a huge screen that showed everything from crashing planes to laughing babies. It was totally cool.
8. The “greening’ of the Oscars was another high point for me. An Inconvenient Truth won Best Feature Length Documentary and it was exciting to see Al Gore’s 30 year commitment to raising public awareness about the dangers of global warming finally hit the mainstream media. In fact, producers of this year’s awards worked to select supplies and services that were consistent with keeping a low impact on the environment. AND several celebrities arrived in eco-friendly cars to promote the conversion to hybrids.
9. Every year I look for a good acceptance speech. This year Forest Whitaker’s emotional acceptance speech was heartfelt and inspiring. He mentioned the usual – dreaming of being on the big screen when he was a boy, thanking God, etc.- but he also talked about reaching out to other people. He must of touched a cord with the whole audience too, because everyone was teary-eyed. They showed his wife (who looked amazing) and she was crying of course. Then they cut to Will Smith and he was red-eyed and nodding his head. After that, they showed Leo DiCaprio and he was practically bawling. What a great speech!
10. But my favorite moment of all was Martin Scorcese’s first Oscar win. Wow, what a moment. He’s such brilliant and devoted filmmaker it was wonderful to see him finally win, especially since The Departed was one of my favorite movies from last year.
Eva,
Thank you so much for covering the Oscars! You wrote a fabulous fashion re-cap! I was unfortunately working on an excel spreadsheet and was not paying as much attention to the awards as I would have liked to.
However, I did notice how gorgeous Cate Blanchett looked and decided that I would have worn that dress had I been at the Oscars!
Thanks Again Eva, We'd love to hear more from you!
